Why Vishwakarma Puja Is Celebrated on 17 September: Kanya Sankranti Explained
The date of Vishwakarma Puja is not arbitrary. It is fixed by a solar event. The Hindu solar calendar used in West Bengal, Assam, Odisha and Bihar measures the year by the Sun’s movement through the twelve zodiac signs. When the Sun transitions from Simha Rashi (Leo) into Kanya Rashi (Virgo), this transition is called Kanya Sankranti. Vishwakarma Puja is observed on this day – the first day of the Kanya month in the solar calendar.
In the Gregorian calendar, this solar transition consistently falls on 17 September (occasionally 16 September in leap years). The date stays the same year after year because it is a solar date, not a lunar one. This is why Vishwakarma Puja does not move around the calendar the way lunar festivals like Diwali or Holi do. 17 September is not a coincidence or a convention. It is an astronomical event.
The Kanya Sankranti has agricultural significance alongside its spiritual one. The Bhadra month (Leo) is the height of the monsoon; Kanya (Virgo) marks its end and the beginning of harvest preparation. In the agricultural calendar, this transition from monsoon to harvest is the time to thank the tools, the machines, the implements that will do the heavy work of the harvest season. The Puja is thus aligned with the natural rhythms of work and season in a way that is entirely intentional.
Vishwakarma Meaning: What the Name Actually Says
The name Vishwakarma is Sanskrit. It breaks into two words:
Vishwa (विश्व) means “all” or “the entire universe” – everything that exists, without exception. It is the same Vishwa that appears in Vishwanath (lord of all), Vishwarupa (the form that encompasses all forms), Vishwavidyalaya (university – literally, the house of all knowledge).
Karma (कर्म) in this context means “action, creation, work” – specifically the act of making something. It is the same Karma that underlies the entire Vedic understanding of cause and effect, but in Vishwakarma’s name it takes the more concrete meaning of craft, construction, the skilled making of things.
Vishwakarma therefore means “he who creates everything” or “the all-maker” – the divine craftsman whose creations encompass the entire universe. The Rigveda describes Vishwakarma as the one who sees all, who knows all, who fashioned the divine worlds with his hands. He is not simply a craftsman who makes useful things. He is the intelligence and skill through which the cosmos itself was assembled.
In Hindi, the name is sometimes rendered as Vishwakarma (विश्वकर्मा), and the festival is called Vishwakarma Puja, Vishwakarma Jayanti, or Biswakarma Puja in Bengali.

Who Is Lord Vishwakarma: The Vedic Divine Architect
Vishwakarma is the divine architect and craftsman of the gods – the Devashipi (divine artisan) who constructs whatever the gods require. He is the son of Brahma in most Puranic traditions. The Rigveda, which is among the oldest texts in human history, mentions Vishwakarma as the divine maker who fashioned the heavens and the earth, who holds all things in place with his creative intelligence.
His iconography reflects his function. He is depicted seated on a flying elephant or a swan chariot, with four or five arms holding different implements: a water-pot, a book (the Vedas), a noose, and various tools of craft. Some forms show him with a crown and celestial ornaments, indicating that his craftsmanship produces not utilitarian objects but objects of divine beauty and cosmic function.
What distinguishes Vishwakarma from other deities is that he is the deity of skill – not of power or wealth or knowledge alone, but of the precise application of skill in the service of creation. Every craftsman, engineer, architect, designer, mechanic and artisan who does their work with care and precision is working in Vishwakarma’s lineage.
Vishwakarma’s Six Greatest Creations
The Puranic texts record many of Vishwakarma’s specific creations. Six stand out for their scale and significance.
1. Lanka: The Golden City
Vishwakarma built Lanka as a golden city for Kubera – the god of wealth who was the original ruler of Lanka. The city was constructed at Kubera’s request and was among the most magnificent structures in the three worlds. When Ravana, through severe penance, obtained Shiva’s blessing and then forcibly expelled Kubera from Lanka, Kubera retreated northward and Lanka became Ravana’s fortress. The golden Lanka that appears in the Ramayana is Vishwakarma’s work – a city so beautiful and so well-built that even Hanuman, upon seeing it for the first time, was astonished by its perfection.
2. Dwarka: Krishna’s City in the Sea
When Krishna moved his people from Mathura to escape Jarasandha’s repeated attacks, Vishwakarma built the city of Dwarka in one night on a piece of land that emerged from the Western sea. The Mahabharata describes Dwarka as a city without equal: twelve yojanas of land reclaimed from the ocean, laid out in perfect geometric order, with wide streets, grand palaces, gardens and harbours. This is the Dwarka that modern archaeological investigations in the Gulf of Khambhat have sought traces of in the seabed.
3. The Pushpaka Vimana: The Flying Palace
The Pushpaka Vimana was a flying vehicle – an aerial palace of enormous size that could carry any number of passengers and always had room for more. Vishwakarma built it for Brahma, who gave it to Kubera as his personal conveyance. Ravana took it from Kubera along with Lanka. After Ravana’s defeat, Ram used it to carry the entire army back from Lanka to Ayodhya – the aerial journey described in loving detail in the Valmiki Ramayana. The Pushpaka is significant because it is one of the earliest descriptions in ancient literature of an aircraft: a constructed vehicle for aerial travel.
4. The Sudarshana Chakra: Vishnu’s Discus
The Sudarshana Chakra – Vishnu’s spinning discus weapon that he carries on his right index finger – was made by Vishwakarma. The Puranas give different versions of its origin but the most consistent holds that Vishwakarma fashioned it by grinding down the excess brightness of the Sun (see below) and using the resulting solar material to create the Chakra. The Sudarshana is described as having a thousand spokes, spinning continuously, cutting through all obstacles, and returning to Vishnu’s finger after each use.
5. The Sun’s Adjusted Radiance and the Vajra
Surya’s wife Sanjana could not bear the full intensity of his radiance and left him. When Vishwakarma discovered the reason, he placed the Sun on his lathe and shaved off one-eighth of his excessive brilliance. From the solar material removed, Vishwakarma fashioned several divine weapons: the Sudarshana Chakra for Vishnu, the Trishula (trident) for Shiva, and the Pushpaka Vimana. This story establishes Vishwakarma not only as a craftsman but as the one who calibrates divine energies to make them usable and liveable – the cosmic engineer who makes things work.
6. Amaravati and the Realm of the Gods
Vishwakarma designed and built Amaravati – Indra’s celestial city, the capital of Swarga (the divine realm). Amaravati is described in the Puranas as the most beautiful city in all three worlds: gardens where wish-fulfilling trees grow, rivers of divine nectar, halls where the Apsaras dance, and palaces where every material is of divine quality. The entire infrastructure of the divine realm was Vishwakarma’s construction.
What these six creations have in common is not scale alone. Each one serves a specific function in the cosmic order – Lanka as the city of wealth, Dwarka as the refuge of the righteous, Pushpaka as the vehicle of divine travel, Sudarshana as the instrument of cosmic justice, Amaravati as the home of divine order. Vishwakarma does not build for beauty alone. He builds for purpose.
Vishwakarma Puja is the festival I most consistently recommend to clients who work with their hands – not because their hands need blessing, but because the act of worshipping your tools changes your relationship with your work. The mechanic who cleans his spanner set and offers flowers to it on Vishwakarma Puja day is doing something that has a real psychological effect: he is treating his tools as partners rather than instruments. The quality of attention this produces carries forward into the year’s work.
From a Jyotisha perspective, the Kanya Sankranti timing of this Puja is significant. Kanya Rashi is governed by Mercury – the planet of skill, precision, craft and discrimination. This is specifically the auspicious alignment for blessing tools and workplaces: the Sun (authority, energy, illumination) in Mercury’s sign (skill, craft, precision) on the day that the solar calendar marks as the beginning of the work-and-harvest season.
For clients who work in professions that involve design, engineering, architecture or any form of construction, I prescribe a specific practice on Vishwakarma Puja day: clean your most important work tool or instrument before sunrise. Place it on a clean white cloth. Offer a flower and a small ghee diya. Chant Om Vishwakarmanaye Namah 108 times. Then: do not use the tool that day. Let it remain offered. Return to it the next morning with the mantra chanted three times before first use. This practice alone has produced observable changes in the quality of attention that clients bring to their craft in the following months.
Vishwakarma Mantra
Meaning: Om – I bow (Namah) to Vishwakarma (Vishwakarmanaye – to the all-creator, dative case).
This is the primary Vishwakarma mantra – the direct salutation to the divine craftsman. Chanted 108 times on Vishwakarma Puja day, ideally during the puja itself and before first use of the tools or instruments that have been offered.
The Vishwakarma Gayatri:
तन्नो विश्वकर्मा प्रचोदयात्।।
Tanno Vishwakarma Prachodayat
Meaning: We know (Vidmahe) Vastoshpati – the lord of dwellings and constructed spaces (Vastu + Pati = lord of built environments). We meditate (Dhimahi) on the four-faced one (Chaturmukha – Vishwakarma’s form with four faces representing four directions of creative intelligence). May that Vishwakarma illuminate and guide our intellect (Prachodayat).
When to chant: Om Vishwakarmanaye Namah – 108 times during puja, 3 times before beginning any new project or using tools. The Gayatri – 11 times as the formal opening of the Vishwakarma Puja.
Vishwakarma Yantra: What It Is and How It Is Used
A Yantra is a geometric sacred instrument – the visual form of a deity’s energy, the same way the mantra is the sonic form. The Vishwakarma Yantra encodes Vishwakarma’s creative intelligence in geometric form.
The Vishwakarma Yantra typically features:
- A central Bindu (point) representing the undivided source of all creation – the singular creative intelligence before it differentiates into specific forms
- Surrounding triangles and geometric patterns representing the precise order that Vishwakarma imposes on the raw material of creation
- An outer square boundary with gates on four sides – the boundaries within which creation takes form
- The Yantra is typically inscribed on copper and energised with the Vishwakarma mantra before placement
Where the Vishwakarma Yantra is used: Factories, workshops, engineering offices, architectural firms, design studios – any workspace where skilled creative work happens. It is placed at the entrance of the workspace or on the desk where primary work is done. The Yantra is understood to maintain the Vishwakarma energy in the workspace continuously, not only on the day of the Puja.
How to energise the Vishwakarma Yantra: On Vishwakarma Puja day, place the Yantra on a red cloth. Offer kumkum, flowers and a ghee diya. Chant Om Vishwakarmanaye Namah 108 times. The Yantra is then ready for installation. On ordinary days, wipe it clean with a clean cloth and offer one flower on Mondays (Mercury’s day – which connects to the Kanya Rashi energy of the Puja date).
Vishwakarma Puja Vidhi: Complete Step-by-Step
Preparation (morning)
- Bathe before sunrise. Clean the entire workspace – factory, workshop, garage, office or home workspace – thoroughly. This is the first act of the Puja: cleaning is worship.
- Clean and polish all tools, machines, vehicles and instruments. The cleaning is not cosmetic – it is the physical act of treating these objects with the respect they deserve.
- Place a clean red or yellow cloth on a surface where the tools will be placed for the Puja.
Setting Up the Puja Space
- Place a Vishwakarma image or idol at the centre of the puja space.
- Arrange the tools, instruments or machines around and before the image. Include everything relevant to your work – a car mechanic includes his spanners; a tailor includes her sewing machine; a software professional can include their laptop keyboard; a carpenter includes their saw and chisel.
- Decorate with marigold flowers and mango leaves. Red cloth wrapping around specific tools is traditional in many regions.
The Puja Steps
- Ganesh invocation: Om Gam Ganapataye Namah – 11 times. Remove all obstacles before the main puja begins.
- Vishwakarma Gayatri: Om Vastoshpataye Vidmahe Chaturmukhaya Dhimahi Tanno Vishwakarma Prachodayat – 11 times.
- Abhishek: Sprinkle milk or Ganga Jal on the Vishwakarma image while chanting Om Vishwakarmanaye Namah.
- Tilak: Apply kumkum tilak to the image and to each tool and machine.
- Flower offering: Offer marigold flowers to the image and place flowers on or beside each major tool.
- Dhupa and Deepa: Circle incense 7 times. Circle the ghee lamp 5 times. Both facing the Vishwakarma image.
- Naivedya: Offer fruits, sweets (ladoo, peda, kheer), coconut and betel leaves.
- Main Japa: Om Vishwakarmanaye Namah – 108 times on a mala.
- Aarti: The Vishwakarma Aarti or a general Aarti chanted with the ghee lamp circled before the image.
- No tool use on Puja day: After the puja, the tools and machines remain at rest for the day. They have been offered to Vishwakarma and are in his care until the following morning.
- Prasad distribution: Distribute sweets and fruits among all workers, colleagues and family members present.
Kite Flying (specifically East India)
In West Bengal, Assam and Odisha, kite flying from factory rooftops is an integral part of the Biswakarma Puja celebration. This tradition is specific to the Eastern solar calendar observance and is not universally practised in other regions. The colourful kites represent joy, the freedom that comes from skilled work, and the upward aspiration that Vishwakarma’s creative intelligence embodies.

In the Vedic understanding, Vishwakarma is the divine intelligence through which all creation takes form. The tools and machines that human beings use in their work are, in this framework, extensions of that creative intelligence – they carry the Vishwakarma energy into practical human life. When a carpenter’s saw cuts clean and true, that precision is Vishwakarma’s quality at work through the tool. When an engine runs smoothly, that is divine order expressed in engineered form.
Worshipping the tools is therefore not worshipping metal objects. It is recognising the divine creative intelligence that flows through the act of skilled work – and acknowledging that the practitioner is not the sole source of that intelligence.
